Statuette of Shiva Nataraja in gilded bronze
This piece has been brought back from Sri Lanka. It is a very old bronze figurine depicting ‘the dance of Shiva’, a Hindu god also known as Nataraja.
Nataraja means ‘king of dancers’. This cosmic dance of Shiva is called ‘anandatandava’.
which means the dance of bliss and symbolises the cosmetic cycles of creation and destruction,
as well as the daily rhythm of birth and death. The cosmic dance was performed in the chidambaram in southern India,
called the centre of the universe by the Hindus
